PENNS GROVE — Officials from the New Jersey
Department of Education have now released their
recommendations for improvement at Penns Grove
High School after the African-American student
subgroup failed to meet benchmark standards for math
during the 2010-2011 school year.
The Collaborative Assessment and Planning for
Achievement (CAPA) report was presented to the
school board members here Monday.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Massare said
eight officials from the state were sent down to evaluate
the inner workings of the high school for a week in
March.
The CAPA report looks at seven standard areas:
Curriculum, classroom evaluation/assessment, instruction,
school culture, support for the school, professional
development and evaluation, and leadership and school
improvement under No Child Left Behind rules.
Each standard is evaluated for strengths and
weaknesses. The team’s focus is to identify the root
causes of poor student achievement for the African-
American subgroup.
The CAPA team conducted interviews, made
classroom visitations, and gathered data for analyzing.
