JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree on Tuesday became the first black candidate in modern times to win major-party nod for Mississippi governor in a state that hasn't had a black statewide official since Reconstruction.

The unemployment situation across America is bad, no doubt. But for African-Americans in some cities, this is not the great recession. It’s the Great Depression.

Newark councilman proposes city eateries that stay open late hire armed security guards by David Glambusso

The chicken shacks and pizza joints that dot Newark’s neighborhoods may be adding armed guards to their night shifts.

Ten years ago, Jersey City made history. Glenn D. Cunningham, the city's first black mayor, took his oath of office on July 1, 2001.

Less than three years later, he was gone, the victim of a massive heart attack
